Drivers attributed the crashes to the slippery pavement caused by persistent rain, with eyewitness accounts describing sudden hydroplaning that led to the vehicles overturning. Gomes Vicente, the motorist of the first bus, explained that he lost control after more than an hour and forty-five minutes of driving, unable to correct the skid, which culminated in the tragic capsize. His account urges caution.
Data from the Polícia Nacional indicate that Angola recorded 1.203 fatalities among 5.084 traffic accidents between January and May 2025, making road incidents a leading public health concern. Analysts stress the urgency of infrastructure upgrades, stricter enforcement, and targeted driver education to mitigate risks and reduce the high mortality rates on national highways. Nonetheless, significant challenges persist across rural and urban routes, demanding coordinated action from government and communities.
